It’s crucial that caravanners do their best to help the environment – there’s no denying that our pastime has an effect on the world, so it’s really important that we all do our best to minimise the impact wherever possible. That might be by shopping locally where we can, choosing organic toilet chemicals and limiting our use of fossil fuels wherever possible.
The industry is also doing more and more to address the issue, but there’s still plenty of improvement – which is why this year we’ve introduced a special award at the Practical Caravan Awards, recognising the brands that are making real inroads into environmental progress, the best green initiative in caravanning.
This award is open to the entire industry, including products, people and ideas; our judges have considered every aspect to find the innovation that represents, in our view, truly clever green thinking.
The best green initiative in caravanning is:
Knaus Cleanflex
- Web: www.knaus.com/en-uk/cleanflex/
- Features include: Hygienic film technology, battery-powered operation, no water or chemicals required
The best caravan toilet chemical will now have much less of an impact on the environment than it used to, but ideally we’d live in a world where chemicals aren’t needed at all. SOG systems exist, of course, and the Good2Go cassettes you’ll find in our Best Caravan Accessory award category, but until now there’s not really been many other alternatives to using toilet additives.
It’s great, then, to see the arrival of Cleanflex from German brand Knaus. This system is self-contained unit that uses neither water nor chemicals – biodegradable and bio-friendly bags seal all waste odourlessly and safely in a tank below the bowl, from where it can then be disposed of in a suitable bin. The amount of liner adapts to the exact amount required, helping avoid overuse.
Not only does Cleanflex save water, it also saves an incredible amount of space, too. Because it requires no water connection, it can be pushed out of the way when not in use, leaving more washroom area for showering – and the designers more flexibility when planning caravan layouts.
It’s a clever solution to something that we’re all going to need to think about in the coming years, so we’re delighted to award Cleanflex Practical Caravan’s Green Award 2025.
