Volkswagen has unveiled the Tayron, its second-largest SUV after the Touareg.

The new model, which will fill the gap between the Tiguan and the Touareg, could be an attractive SUV for towing, offering with a choice of five- or seven-seat layouts.

Engine-wise, the range will start with a 150hp mild-hybrid petrol. There will be two more powerful petrol models, and two turbodiesels. Plug-in hybrids will also be available, with a choice of 204hp or 272hp versions. These are said to be capable of more than 62 miles running on electricity.

All four-wheel-drive models have a maximum towing weight of 2500kg. Other technical details for UK specification cars are thin on the ground at present, but kerbweights are likely to start from around 1650kg, rising to almost two tonnes.

Any vehicle that is sold with towing gear will come with Volkswagen’s Trailer Assist feature already fitted, which helps tow car drivers to reverse a caravan more easily. Inside, the Tayron promises more space than the Tiguan and an extra row of seats, except for the plug-ins, which forgo the third row to house the hybrid’s battery pack. Sales will begin in early 2025, and we expect to test the Tayron’s towing credentials later in the year.
