Historic St Peter’s Church offers a Northampton welcome this Christmas

REDISCOVER THE PAST

Thanks to the Churches Conservation Trust (CCT) charity, December 2013 will be a time of seasonal singing, warmth, light and stories. By putting on a series of events, the Trust is helping to protect historic churches around Britain.

Traditional carol singing for all ages will be on offer of course, plus spine-tingling arias by candlelight, rousing and beautiful choral singing, majestic bell-ringing and even brass-band sing-alongs. Best of all, they’ll take place in fascinating old churches and chapels, all over the country.

Reindeer Visit, Stories and Santa’s Sleigh

Holy Trinity Church, Goodramgate, York

30 November, 2pm. Free for children, Adults £3

Children can visit Santa’s reindeer at Holy Trinity Church. Families are welcome to sit in Santa’s sleigh and get their photo taken to capture the magical moment. A green St Nicholas will also be on site, bringing to life a truly traditional Christmas with Victorian-inspired arts and crafts activities for children and storytelling about the legends of Christmas past. Children can dip into a bran tub full of wrapped Christmas presents and mulled wine and hot soup will be on sale.

Chapel Carol Service

St Andrew’s Church, Winterbourne Tomson, Dorset

December, 6pm. Free

After an enchanting Advent carol service, mince pies and mulled wine will be served at the Manor House at Winterborne Tomson. We’re lucky to have this pretty Norman chapel today, because less than 100 years ago, it was ‘given over to the donkeys, dogs, pigs and fowls’ of the local farm. The church escaped total ruin in 1931 only when The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings sold a collection of Thomas Hardy manuscripts to pay for repairs.

Wrap up warmly, as the church is 436 metres above sea level. Mulled wine and mince pies will also be served. The Trust’s Christmas cards were inspired by the lovely stained glass window at St Michael & All Angels.

Dickensian Carols by Candlelight

St James’ Church, Cooling, Kent

Dickens fans will love this beautiful church and churchyard, which inspired the author. It is an extraordinary experience to find this lavishly decorated Medieval-style church with Italian marble mosaic floors in such a rural location. If you are lucky, you might even hear the lovely peal of eight bells ringing out.
